Building a Supportive and Inclusive Community for BIWOC Climbers

At The Crux, we believe that climbing is for everyone. We strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment where climbers of all backgrounds and skill levels can come together to challenge themselves, overcome obstacles, and build lasting connections. That's why we are proud to partner with Affinity Initiative, a community group based in Naarm/Melbourne that is dedicated to making and holding space for BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, Women of Colour) in climbing. Together, we host monthly AI membership meet-ups on the first Friday of every month, where Climbers-of-Colour can come together to climb, connect, and support one another.

1. Creating Safe Spaces for Climbers-of-Colour

Climbing can be a challenging and intimidating sport, especially for those who may not see themselves represented in the climbing community. Climbers-of-Colour in particular often face barriers related to systemic racism and other forms of discrimination. Affinity Initiative seeks to address these issues by creating a safe and welcoming space where Climbers-of-Colour can feel supported and uplifted. The Crux is proud to work with Affinity Initiative to create a supportive environment that empowers Climbers-of-Colour to push their boundaries and reach new heights.

2. Building Connections and Community

In addition to providing a safe and inclusive space, the Affinity Initiative meet-ups at The Crux are also an opportunity for BIWOC climbers to connect with and support one another. Climbing can be a solitary sport, but it is also one that fosters a strong sense of community. Through these meet-ups, BIWOC climbers can build friendships, share beta, and encourage one another to achieve their goals. By creating a supportive community, we hope to inspire more BIWOC climbers to pursue their passion for climbing and find joy and fulfillment in this sport.

3. Affordable Access to Climbing

We believe that everyone should have access to the benefits of climbing, regardless of their financial situation. That's why we offer affordable pricing for our AI membership meet-ups. For just $15, BIWOC climbers can climb at our gym and enjoy free shoe hire. We want to make climbing as accessible as possible for BIWOC climbers, and this pricing structure reflects that commitment.

4. Skill-Building and Growth Opportunities

Climbing is a sport that requires both physical strength and mental focus. Through our AI membership meet-ups, we aim to provide opportunities for BIWOC climbers to build their skills and push their limits. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced climber, these meet-ups offer a chance to learn new techniques, practice your skills, and grow as a climber. We also occasionally host special events and workshops to provide additional growth and learning opportunities.

5. Creating Lasting Impact

Our partnership with Affinity Initiative is about more than just monthly meet-ups - it's about making a lasting impact on the climbing community. By working together to create a supportive and inclusive space for BIWOC climbers, we hope to inspire change throughout the climbing world. We aim to show that climbing can and should be a sport for everyone, and that BIWOC have a valuable and important place in this community. Through our partnership and ongoing efforts, we believe that we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering future for all climbers.

At The Crux, we are proud to partner with Affinity Initiative to provide a platform for BIWOC climbers to connect, support one another, and pursue their passion for climbing. Through our AI meet-ups on the first Friday of each month, we strive to create a safe and inclusive space where BIWOC climbers can push their boundaries and grow as climbers. We believe that our partnership with Affinity Initiative reflects our core values of inclusivity, community, affordability, skill-building, and impact, and we are excited to continue working together to build a better climbing world for all. We invite all BIWOC climbers to join us for our monthly AI meet-ups and be part of this vital and inspiring initiative.
